Car Clubs are a relatively new concept in this country, yet are quickly gaining popularity as a cost effective and convenient means of transport. SpareWheels in Dunbar is one of the first not-for-profit car clubs in Scotland.
Easy and affordable, our cars are available 24/7. Just book it, drive it, return it.

We’re not-for-profit
SpareWheels C.I.C was incorporated on 22nd March 2011 as a Community Interest Company limited by guarantee (Company Number SC396022). This means that we are not-for-profit; we will use any surplus money to provide a better service to our members and keep our prices low.
We’re part of something bigger
SpareWheels is part of the CommonWheels network of community-led carsharing clubs. This gives our members access to 67 cars all over the country, from Dunbar to Portsmouth. CommonWheels provide our online booking service and a 24-hour emergency helpline.
Like SpareWheels, Commonwheels is a Community Interest Company, which means we are both motivated by environmental and social goals rather than financial profit.
We’ve been given a leg-up
In March 2011, we received a start-up grant of £25, 000 from the Scottish Government’s Developing Car Clubs in Scotland fund, which allowed us to purchase 2 cars and install the in-car telematics. It also pays for our first year’s insurance and franchise payments to CommonWheels. The scheme is administered by the national charity CarPlus, who are on hand for advice and support.
We’re locally owned
SpareWheels’ volunteer directors are: Keith Nicolson (chair), Morag Haddow (secretary), David Watson and Su Nuttgens.
We all live in Dunbar and are committed to the success of the club. Any money invested in SpareWheels C.I.C will stay in Dunbar and used to keep our prices low and support our members.
We can’t do it without you
We have no paid members of staff and rely on our members to keep the cars in good condition and report any problems. Sustaining Dunbar has provided support with initial research and ongoing promotion. Commonwheels have full-time staff at their offices in Durham who will take members through the joining process, handle online and telephone booking, and requests for roadside assistance.
