SpareWheels is part of the Commonwheels network of community carsharing clubs, who make it easier for us local volunteers by handling the joining process and the online booking and billing.
The joining process
- Fill in your details on the Commonwheels website or by calling 0845 602 8030
- The Direct Debit form will be emailed/posted to you
- Sign and post the Direct Debit form to Commonwheels (or send a deposit of £150 if you prefer)
- Once Direct Debit is set up (or cheque received) Commonwheels will contact you to arrange DVLA check. This is done via a 3-way phone call and only takes a few minutes.
- Once you have cleared the DVLA check you will be sent your login details and can book the cars immediately
- Your smartcard to unlock the cars will be put in the post and you’ll receive it within a few days
Because we rely on the postal service at a couple of stages, the whole process can take a few days. If you need to speed things up, please get in touch with Morag in Dunbar on 07922 886050 and we’ll do our best to help.
Who can join?
Members over the age of 18 who have held a driving licence for at least 12 months. If you have 6 or more points on your licence we will have to refer you to our insurers to check they are able to cover you.
Add household members for £15
If you need to share the driving, then friends and family can be added to your account for a one-off payment of £15. They need not live at your address, but any bookings they make will be charged to your account.
SpareWheels for Business
By becoming a business member, you could reduce the cost of your own business travel. Additionally, with SpareWheels cars available for work trips, your staff will be able to leave their own cars at home, reducing demand for parking spaces. Joining fees are a one-off £25 to sign up the business, plus £10 per driver registration. Thereafter the usual charges apply.
Just want to use our bikes?
It couldn’t be easier. There is no joining fee for members who just want access to our bikes from time to time. Phone 07922 886050 or email mail@sparewheels.org.uk to register and we’ll send you the details. Bikes cost £5 per day (or part day) to hire. The bikes are used by the Dunbar Primary School and are generally available for hire at weekends and during school holidays.
